Medicare, HSAs and Direct Primary Care: How Paying for Membership Works

Medicare, HSAs and Direct Primary Care: How Paying for Membership Works

From the team at Datri MD, Stone Oak

"Can I use my HSA?" and "What about Medicare?" are two of the questions we hear most. Here's how each works at Datri MD.

If you have an HSA

  • A 2025 federal law lets people with HSA-eligible health plans have direct primary care, starting January 1, 2026.
  • For 2026, the IRS limit is $150/month for an individual and $300/month for a family. Our individual membership is $150/month ($1,800/year), within that limit.
  • Membership fees can be paid with HSA funds. They don't count toward your plan's deductible.
  • If your employer pays for your membership, different rules may apply. Check with your plan administrator or tax advisor before you enroll.

If you have Medicare

  • Dr. Datri has opted out of Medicare. Medicare won't pay for her services, and we never bill Medicare for you.
  • Instead, you sign a private contract (Medicare requires it) and pay the membership directly.
  • Your Medicare still works everywhere else: hospital stays, specialists, imaging, and emergencies.
  • Many members on Medicare join for the time and access: longer visits, help managing several medications, and a doctor they can reach.

If you have regular insurance (or none)

  • Membership is the same price either way. We recommend keeping coverage for hospital care, specialists, and emergencies.
  • Without insurance? We can help with discounted cash prices for labs.

Here's what people usually ask before they call:

Why $150 a month instead of a copay? You see the same physician every time: Dr. Datri, a board-certified internist. Visits are longer, you can call or text her directly, and in-office ultrasound, ECG, spirometry, and urinalysis are included.

Money is tight. Can I make this work? Many members pair membership with a lower-cost or high-deductible plan, and HSA funds can often pay the fee. Call us and we'll talk through your situation honestly, even if that means telling you it's not the right fit.

Do I still need insurance? Yes. Keep it for hospital stays, specialists, and emergencies. We handle your everyday care.

Can I reach Dr. Datri after hours? Yes. Call or text her directly, and she'll get back to you as soon as she can. For emergencies, call 911.
